This paper reviews Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) in detail by discussing the strength of the GAN when compared to other generative models, how GANs works and some of the notable problems with training, tuning and evaluating GANs. The paper also briefly reviews notable GAN architectures like the Deep Convolutional Generative Adversarial Network (DCGAN), and Wasserstein GAN, with the aim of showing how design specifications in these architectures help solve some of the problems with the basic GAN model. All this is done with a view of discussing the application of GANs in cybersecurity studies. Here, the paper reviews notable cybersecurity studies where the GAN plays a key role in the design of a security system or adversarial system. In general, from the review, one can observe two major approaches these cybersecurity studies follow. In the first approach, the GAN is used to improve generalization to unforeseen adversarial attacks, by generating novel samples that resembles adversarial data which can then serve as training data for other machine learning models. In the second approach, the GAN is trained on data that contains authorized features with the goal of generating realistic adversarial data that can thus fool a security system. These two approaches currently guide the scope of modern cybersecurity studies with generative adversarial networks.

A review of generative adversarial networks and its application in cybersecurity

The availability of biometric data for cybersecurity studies is very important and the Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) provides a means of generating realistic fake biometric data that may mitigate some of the privacy concerns with using real biometric data. This paper trains a Deep Convolutional Generative Adversarial Network (DCGAN) to generate fake biometric fingerprint images. The quality of the generated images is measured using the NFIQ2 algorithm and although the qualitative analysis of the fake fingerprints indicate that the images are of good quality, the NFIQ2 scores obtained for the fake fingerprints are of low utility value. We also explore fingerprint matching by first extracting the minutiae feature points from both the fake generated fingerprint samples and the real fingerprint images using the MINDTCT technique. The minutiae feature points from the fake fingerprint images are then matched (one-to-many) against feature points extracted from real fingerprint images using the BOZORTH3 algorithm. This is done in order to appraise the GANs ability to generate data points with features that generalize beyond the precise domain of the training datasets features. The results from the fingerprint matching show that the fake generated fingerprint samples contain unique fingerprint images.

Biometric Fingerprint Generation using Generative Adversarial Networks

We examine whether having previously been self-employed is a negative signal on the job market. In a UK field experiment where two applications of otherwise equally qualified individuals were sent out in response to the same vacancies in human resource management, we find that entrepreneurs systematically receive fewer responses than non-entrepreneurs. Empirical studies that treat market wages as the opportunity cost of remaining self-employed are therefore likely to overestimate alternative earnings to entrepreneurship.

Self-Employed but Looking: A Labor Market Experiment

High failure rates and low average returns suggest that too many people may be entering markets. Thus, anticipating how one will perform in the market is a fundamental component of the decision to start a business. Using a large sample obtained from population surveys conducted in 18 countries, we study what variables are significantly associated with the decision to start a business. We find strong evidence that subjective, and often biased, perceptions have a crucial impact on new business creation across all countries in our sample. The strongest cross-national covariate of an individual's entrepreneurial propensity is shown to be whether the person believes to have the sufficient skills, knowledge and ability to start a business. In addition, we find a significant negative correlation between this reported level of entrepreneurial confidence and the approximated survival chances of nascent entrepreneurs across countries. Our results suggest that some countries exhibit relatively high rates of start-up activity because their inhabitants are more (over)confident than in other countries.

The academic peer review system is central to scientific progress, but it has well-known flaws. Symptoms are substantial delays in getting new research published and, most seriously, the uncertain quality of published works due to non-transparent refereeing criteria and effort, as well as poor incentives to replicate. This paper reviews empirical indicators of these issues and conceptually characterizes an efficient decentralized market for refereeing. The challenge is not merely to balance the demand and supply in refereeing services. Efficiency entails, statically, that (1) the right works and properties of those works are reviewed, (2) the right experts perform the review, and (3) the right effort is expended on the review. Furthermore, efficiency entails, dynamically, that the system evolves toward cheaper and more accurate reviews. We introduce an anonymous consensus-based protocol, combined with a Vickrey-style auction, that can satisfy these demands.

The BOLT-LMM software package computes statistics for association between phenotype and genotypes using a linear mixed model (LMM) [1]. By default, BOLT-LMM assumes a Bayesian mixture-of-normals prior for the random effect attributed to SNPs other than the one being tested. This model generalizes the standard "infinitesimal" mixed model used by existing mixed model association methods (e.g., EMMAX [2], FaST-LMM [3-6], GEMMA [7], GRAMMAR-Gamma [8], GCTA-LOCO [9]), providing an opportunity for increased power to detect associations while controlling false positives. Additionally, BOLT-LMM applies algorithmic advances to compute association statistics much faster than existing methods, both when using the Bayesian mixture model and when specialized to standard mixed model association.
